One of the most common and effective methods of advertising and marketing a business and it's products and services, is through the use of various types of signage.
In effect signage is a method of advertising in public locations aimed directly at the general public. A business may use signs to direct potential customers to their physical location, advertise various products and services, display promotions at events or marketing the brand of the business.
Signage in general is a vast industry that may include various types of signage from hand-painted signage (e.g. pin-striping), vinyl cut-out signage (vinyl lettering), digital print signage (billboards, vehicle wraps, etc.), electronic signage (e.g. window projection), 3D-printing, fabric printing (t-shirts, caps, etc.), sand blasting (e.g. gravestone lettering), to name a few.
A common mistake many businesses make when it comes to signage is to simply take an idea for a sign and let a signage company come up with a sign according to specific instructions from the business. Elements to consider when designing effective signage products that are clearly visible and readable, are easy to notice and carry the message across in a quick and simple, but yet powerful manner:
Consistency with Corporate Brand:
  Business signage should be developed and designed to be consistent with the brand identity of the business.
Keep it Simple:
  Effective sign design quickly and clearly displays a message using as few words as possible.  Spend some time determining the message you want to convey and keep environment in mind when creating your signage.
Leave Plenty of White Space:
  Leave plenty of “white space” – that blank area around text and images. An overabundance of text and graphics overwhelms viewers. If you want to get wordy, save it for a press release.
Use Clearly Readable Typefaces:
  Fancy typefaces don’t make for better sign design. Unreadable typefaces are completely useless. Opt for clear, straight typefaces that are easily readable, using bold letters or slightly larger text for emphasis.
Use Effective Colour Combinations:
  White text is very difficult to read. Extensive research shows black, dark blue, or red text on a background of yellow or white is the most readable combination. Keep colours and design consistent to avoid a scattered, busy atmosphere.
Use Images Carefully:
  Make sure images and icons you choose are not only large enough to be easily discerned, but that they have a clear, immediate connection to your type of business, such as a logo.
